UCAT 2023 Interim Results Are Out: How Good Is My UCAT Score?

The UCAT is being sat by candidates up until 28 September 2023 and as such, the final statistics are not available (at the time of this article being updated).

However, the interim statistics provide you with a good indication of how well you did in the UCAT.

UCAT 2023 Interim Statistics

The preliminary mean total scaled score is 2568.

The table below shows the total scaled score (VR + DM + QR + AR) required to attain a particular decile rank. For example, if your total score is 2940 or above, this means you will likely be in the 9th decile rank, or top 10% of the candidates.

For the SJT section, 27% of students were placed in Band 1, 40% in Band 2, 24% in Band 3 and 8% in Band 4.

Note: The interim statistics are based on 20,334 candidates who sat the test until 15 September. The final statistics will change depending on the performance of the ~16,000 candidates who are yet to take the UCAT.

Impact on your medical school application

There are over 30 medical schools in the UK that require you to sit the UCAT, but they differ on how your scores are used. For example:

• Some have a minimum threshold for the overall score.
• Some use the overall score to invite applicants to interview (as a sole criterion or alongside other criteria such as academic performance).
• Some exclude applicants with low SJT scores.

If your UCAT scores are disappointing...

If you think you may not make the minimum overall UCAT score threshold or be placed in Band 4 for the SJT, do not give up hope just yet. There are plenty of options if you are still keen on pursuing a career in medicine, including:

• Medical schools that require the BMAT instead of the UCAT
• Taking a gap year and sitting the UCAT again
• Studying medicine abroad (Eastern Europe, Republic of Ireland, Australia and New Zealand)
